Department of Geography

Description

The Department of Geography is one of the most important scientific and humanities departments of the college of humanities at the university of Halabja. It was established in 2016 and the first group of students were accepted in the academic year (2017-2018).

The study programs are distributed into four years in the Department of Geography during which the students study a range of subjects concerned with natural and human geography, in addition to some auxiliary materials such as English language, Arabic language, history, statistics, computer, economics and meteorology.

Department Vision

  •  Highlighting the role of geography in social life by exploiting the natural and human components of geography to plan for the development of various sectors on which the community is based.
  • Achieving the useful value of the department’s specialization through the assessment of available resources, investment of the student’s abilities, development in understanding the geographical environment and deepen loyalty to the homeland through the development of a strategy for the future by developing current computer labs, GIS laboratory and educational climate observatory tools.
  •  Participation in the scientific and geographical movements at the regional and international levels. And development of the scientific culture through academic renewal and continuous development of the curriculum in line with the nature of specialization and job market requirements, especially in new scientific courses including geographic information systems, cartography and development.
  •   Preparing and developing students and expanding their cognitive, intellectual and scientific understanding of all geographical materials to qualify them for teaching and conducting scientific research in the institutions of the ministry of education and other ministries that can benefit from the geographical experiences of graduate students of the department.

Department Mission

The mission of the department is to:

  •   search for the elements and phenomena of the natural and human environment and the impact of their relationship. How are they distributed? where and why?
  •     take academic steps in the undergraduate and graduate studies to achieve the vision of the department and prepare distinguished cadres in the fields of the department’s specialization and deepen the concept of applied training to meet the needs of the community at the local level.
  •    seek to conduct various scientific researches in the field of geographical thought and understanding of environmental problems and the actual work to find appropriate solutions.

Learning Outcomes

The objectives of the department are:

  • Demonstrating the role of geography in society by utilizing natural and human resources to foster development across various sectors that contribute to societal progress.
  • Achieving significant benefits through the assessment and utilization of existing resources, enhancing student abilities, cultivating an understanding of the geographical environment, and fostering patriotism. This involves the development of detailed strategies for the future, as well as the establishment and enhancement of computer laboratories, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and weather stations.
  • Participating in the regional and international geographical scientific movements, contributing to progress, and cultivating a culture of geographical science through continuous research method development that aligns with the nature of work and labor market needs.
  • Preparing students by expanding their thoughts, feelings, and knowledge across all geographical subjects, enabling them to work in educational institutions and other ministries where their knowledge and abilities can be beneficial.

Teaching study in our department is the Bologna process.

The main language in this department is Kurdish.

The duration of the study is 4 academic years and 8 semesters.
